Chicken project

Today marked the start of our 'chicken project'. We are planning to get chickens at some point in the next few weeks. (For laying). I ordered a load of books from the library for our research. I managed to find 5 story books about chickens so we enjoyed those today amongst our chicken crafts.
I printed out some printables last night ready.
While colouring in our 'chicken life cycle' we talked all about chickens and how the cycle continues going round. We covered pretty much everything you could think of! Big bee even came up with 2 names for our future hens. 'Snuggle bunny' and 'chicken roast'!!! Hahaha!
We talked about fertile eggs and the eggs we buy from the supermarket amongst our conversation. Big bee seemed thrilled at having baby chicks so maybe we might have to look at that in the future!
We told stories and this one in particular bought up the subject of foxes and predators. Another good topic! We discussed how we'd protect our chickens. One of the suggestions?? Just keep them indoors mummy! Hmmm, maybe not!
Our finished cycle of life. Big bee looked through the breeds of chicken and coloured in her chicken like one in the book.
A break to water our seeds..
Then little bee started on his activity while big bee started on the next chicken thing on the agenda.
I cut open 3 coloured peppers and little bee scooped the seeds out and put into a dampened tissue bag. Keeping colours separate (hopefully!)
He then made labels to mark which colour bag was which.
And stuck them on!
Meanwhile big bee had 4 pieces of cardboard which she was individually wrapping.
Once wrapped we assembled to make a 'chicken house'
Next we thought of all the things chickens would need, and drew those things. Here is big bee encouraging little bee who drawed a random shape which we called a pear.
All the things on the plate to eat are things chickens might like, we even included grit. There is hay inside the nesting box and of course now the chicks could move in!
Little bee played for a bit but big bee was playin with this for ages. So sweet hearing little chick voices!
After that we headed outside for some exercise and play. Lots of biking, and made up games! Catching lions, going up on the mountain to there castle! Chasing bees and butterflies.. All going on! :-) lovely with the sun shining too. :-)
